Paint the Pavement!

A partnership among Country Club Heights Neighborhood Association, City of Charlotte’s Neighborhood Matching Grants Program, Charlotte Department of Transportation, and Shamrock Gardens Elementary lead to this one-of-a-kind legacy project for 5th grade students. Residents of Country Club Heights have experienced a decades-long problem with cars driving at excessive speeds right in front of our neighborhood school, Shamrock Gardens Elementary. We did a little research and found that painting the pavement makes speeding rates drop drastically. We decided to take on this project with lots of help from some talented, Henri Matisse-inspired 5th graders! Check out this time-lapse video of the amazing work. 80 5th graders and 30 volunteers provided more than 100 hours of service to paint 90 squares covering 2,100 sq. ft. Pretty amazing!
